Your original comment does not come across as wanting to have an honest conversation, it reads like you have not read or understood what the author is saying. For example, you say "I'm not sure why you would care if I called a friend of mine "chief"' but the author has explained why, and my reply to you was driving the point home. It's hard to be civil when you appear to be willfully ignorant by not reading the author's words and questioning their motives - it's right there in the text!
Using the word to refer to an actual chief is fine (eg. Chief of Police) - but how many police chiefs do you know? None probably, so why are you so adamant that it's ok to use the word? You're being argumentative then getting offended when I actually argue with you, which is very passive-aggressive.
