I agree with you, I enjoyed TROS and feel it’s a fitting end to the saga. I’ve enjoyed the new trilogy overall — yes, there are inconsistencies and compromises between the films and within each film, but that is also true of the original trilogy as well (Leia turning from a romantic love interest into a sibling love interest in relation to Luke for example — that was definitely not planned from the start!). Hell, even Darth Vader turning out to be Luke’s father was not planned when Lucas first wrote Star Wars — retconning was present from the very start, it’s almost a Star Wars tradition at this point.

The new trilogy has everything I want and expect from Star Wars — great characters, great action, spaceships and Jedi. These films are swashbuckling in space/space westerns, not complicated, nuanced or high concept sci-fi — if fans want those types of films, they should watch 2001: A Space Odyssey or Arrival instead.

A common criticism of the new trilogy is that there was no road-map — but fans are forgetting (or do not know) that George Lucas did not have much of a road-map for the original trilogy and many of the narrative decisions were made as the films progressed. He also had a lot of help from many talented writers and directors to realise his vision. Then Lucas had complete creative control for the prequels, which is why they suck.
