Great story! I really enjoyed reading this. I'm AuDHD and relate to your work experiences. Pure dumb luck landed me in my career in tech (Application Support) - after 10 years of shitty jobs, I accepted an offer of a job where I'd be working on the phone, which was something I had avoided before then. But helping customers on the phone was actually enjoyable and I found I had a knack for diagnosing problems and finding solutions. Without the luck of that job 10 years ago, I'd probably still be doing shitty, soul-crushing jobs like many of my fellow Autistics I know.
The randomness of life/careers and the lack of robust systems and processes to help people find the right work for them is utterly frustrating and baffling to me. If capitalism is about profit, and getting the right people in the right jobs maximises profit, then why don't we (as a society) have a decent system to get people in the right jobs? The older I get, the more I accept the madness of the world, but I think I'll always be partly confused about the structure (or lack of) of this neurotypical world.
