This is why you never, ever talk to the police or detectives in an interview room without solicitor advice.

In the UK, ask for the Duty Solicitor, they are impartial, won’t share information with the police and will advise about the interview, but they won’t give ongoing advice. If the duty solicitor tells you to contact them again after you are charged, please ignore that advice and obtain your own solicitor to represent you, to build a case for you and prevent you from being charged or prosecuted in the first place. Defence solicitors can often provide a fixed fee to help you anticipate costs involved. What price would you put on your freedom and reputation?
